The median pizza in Australia costs $20.50. That is the middle of 4,974 priced pizzas on the menus of 1,291 venues — every pizza on those menus, not one chosen kind.
Half of all pizzas fall between $15 and $27, which is a wide band and is the point: the same word covers a margherita at a suburban shop and a truffle pizza at a restaurant. Narrowing it to the one pizza that is the same everywhere gives a much tighter answer.
The margherita is the comparable one
A margherita is the same dish in every shop in the country, which makes it the fair comparison. Its median is $20 across 517 venues, with the middle half between $15.60 and $24 — a noticeably tighter band than pizza in general, because it is one dish rather than a menu section.
