What should a flat white cost?

What breakfast out costs in Australia

Median prices for a flat white, eggs benedict and avocado on toast, counted across Australian cafe menus rather than estimated.

Last updated 18 August 2026

A flat white and eggs benedict comes to $28.20 at the middle of the market — a $5.20 coffee and a $23 plate.

The coffee figure is the shakiest number on this site

It is $5.20 across 194 venues, and that sample is small for a country with tens of thousands of cafes — because most of them do not publish a coffee price at all. A cafe puts its food menu online and leaves the coffee to the board behind the counter, so the venues counted here are the ones that happened to list it. Read it as a real measurement of a partial sample rather than as the national price of a flat white.

Avocado on toast is the opposite: 350 venues list it, its middle half spans $17 to $24, and that spread is the honest answer to whether it is overpriced. It depends entirely on where you sit down.

How this was measured

Medians of every priced menu row naming the item, matched on name and section. Rows below 40% or above 250% of the item’s own median are excluded as add-ons and retail packs — a “latte” at $29 is a kilogram of beans. Recomputed from the catalogue exported on 2026-08-18.

Brunch, searched properly

Ask for brunch somewhere quiet with outdoor seating and MenuMap will rank on all three, then tell you which of them it could actually check.
